TIME TRAVEL
“The dreams of yesterday,
Is the reality of today,
And the necessity of tomorrow”
All of us have enjoyed watching the movie, ‘The Terminator’, wherein, a warrior from the future returns to the past to destroy his enemy.
All these, and many more science fictional stunts, are enjoyed by millions world over, and all of us, at some point of our lives, have fantasized, about the idea of time travel.
But how about actually having a time machine in our real world..??
Imagine, if we were allowed to actually choose the time and place we would like to stay in.
It would simply be fantastic..!!
Any able headed person would simply write off the idea, but I have devised a methodology to execute a time machine…
It is not a blue print or anything, but merely just to spark the idea of time travel in all minds..!!
It all began for me during one day of my physics classes, wherein we were being taught about Einstein’s discovery of relativity, and its consequences…
Time dilation was in discussion….
Because the teacher didn’t know much about the topic, I decided to read various books, to satiate my curiosity….
I started reading a large number of books, and that is when I came across the case of Twin Paradox, where a space traveler ages lesser than his twin back on Earth. So, basically, the space traveling twin ages lesser than his counterpart back on Earth.
So, in simpler terms, the space traveling twin has gone to the future.
Applying it to the real life, we face some major practical problems.
And through this article, I intend to solve them.
So, now we shall analyze the possibility of time travel.
Firstly, as per the Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, and related corollaries, we study time dilation.
The theory of time dilation states that for an object or a person moving with a certain velocity with respect to earth, an observer on Earth would observe time to be passing slowly for the traveling object.
Basically, time is dilated for a moving person.
We shall now use words like, traveler’s time and Earth stationary observer on Earth.
Speaking quantitatively,
This ‘v’ is not the total average velocity but instead is the velocity by which it is instantaneous traveling.
Now, let us take an arbitrary problem.
|
Suppose a traveler first leaves Earth at a speed of c/2.
For, journey 1,
(Earth to an international space station dockyard),
According to the above formula, the time taken by this space traveler is 1.15 times the time taken on earth, there by, making it slower, for time to pass for him.
So, as the craft reaches the ISS dockyard, it would’ve passed 1.15 on Earth, while just 1 hour passed for this guy, and
On getting back to earth, only 2 hours passed for him, while 2.30 hours passed on Earth,
Bingo, his future travels..!!
Thus, by suitably varying the velocity of the traveler, any time spot of the future can be reached unto.
To bring about significant changes, a large velocity is needed which is the biggest deterrent in time travel...
We talked of a much required ISS dockyard, wherein the craft would dock itself up, get refueled, or any other required facilitation of propulsion, that enables this hypothetical craft to return to Earth.
This dockyard should be fairly at a large distance, so that not many cycles are needed.
This is easily achievable, and not many issues exist here.
To propel this craft, we need a geed supply of fuel, and requisite techniques, and this will be covered later…
Now, because we are relying on a dockyard for harboring our crafts, a manned probe would require proper decelerating techniques at the dockyard, resulting in lowering of speeds from about the ultimate speed, to almost a standstill.
Thus,
because human body is sensitive only to acceleration and not to velocity, thus, the acceleration should either be kept low, or must be given in small steps, as in cyclotron.
Next,
Talking about mass transformations, as per the famous Lorentz’s equations,
A craft of mass ‘m’ traveling at a speed c/2 would become 1.15 times the actual mass, and this relativistic mass will only increase with increase in velocity, which becomes infinite at the speed of light.
Thus, if we intend of building a craft, we also need to consider the increased power input.
At speed=c, the mass becomes infinite,
And so, we need to install an upper limit to the speed of the spaceship, beyond which the fuels can’t accelerate the vehicle.
Finally, the time traveler should be physically prepared to experience a world, wherein a lot of time has passed while he’s been away.
Of course, it’s needless to say that the cost of such a mission would unimaginably be high, but it would eventually lead to realization of one of the biggest dreams of mankind.
Through this article, I try to convince the reader, not that I have devised a time machine, but just that,
All we need is hope, optimism, and diligence to realize it.
It might sound impossible today, but I’m sure it’s going to be a reality of tomorrow.
Have the vision,
Thank you.
